How a typing test measures WPM

The number this test hands you isn't counting words at all. It's counting characters, then doing arithmetic. Understanding the formula explains why two people who type the same sentence can score differently — and why your result here rarely matches the speed you live at.

Why a word is five characters

Words have wildly different lengths, so WPM standardizes one “word” to five characters, spaces included. A test sums the characters you typed correctly, divides by five, then scales to a minute. Type 300 correct characters in 30 seconds and you've produced 60 standardized words at 120 WPM. It's an honest unit precisely because it ignores how short or long the real words were — the same reason every WPM-to-CPM conversion is just multiplication by five.

Why the test counts correct characters only

Raw speed is cheap; a mistake you have to fix isn't free. This test scores correctly typed characters, so a burst of garbage doesn't inflate your number — which is why a genuinely good score pairs speed with 95%+ accuracy rather than chasing one without the other.

A snapshot, not your real speed

Thirty seconds on someone else's word list is a sprint on a flat track. Your actual day is email, code, edits, and pauses to think — usually slower, occasionally faster, and far more honest about your habits. That gap is the whole point of measuring real keystrokes as you work instead of timing a test, and it's why most people land below the average of around 40 WPM the moment the words are their own.

How is typing speed measured?

Typing speed is measured in words per minute (WPM), where one “word” is standardized to five characters. This test counts your correctly typed characters over the time elapsed, so errors don’t inflate your score.

What is a good typing speed?

The average typing speed is around 40 WPM. 65–80 WPM is a strong, professional pace; sustained speeds above 100 WPM are fast. Accuracy matters as much as raw speed — aim for 95%+.

How is this different from Pulse?

This is a 30-second test on a fixed word list. Pulse, the macOS app, measures your real typing speed automatically as you work in every app — no test required — and filters out AI/autocomplete keystrokes so the number is genuinely yours.
